Tall buildings conference
in London
Invensys
is hosting an important conference on Building for the 21st Century,
which is sponsored by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat
in association with numerous other industry associations.
The December
9-11 conference is the first global conference in the building industry
since the attacks of September 11. It is being held at the Queen
Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London, UK and more than 50 technical
papers will be presented at workshops.
Overall, tall
buildings have excellent safety records and the task force is seeking
to increase the level of safety in the built environment. A particular
area for attention is integrated systems, as there are many systems
inside and outside the building which, if integrated, could provide
on-site and remote information about occupants and environment to
the appropriate authorities.
The Council
on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is an international organisation
designed to assist everyone involved in the planning, design, construction
and operation of tall buildings. It includes experts from organisations
with global presence that have a wide range of expertise in building
design, including building control systems, electrical engineering,
fire protection and building security.
It has concluded
that it is not practical to design any building to withstand the
maliciously directed impact of a large fuel-laden aircraft and that
the buildings in the World Trade Center attack performed well, which
allowing more than 20,000 people to evacuate.
