Windows NT is Tesco's
operating system of choice for point-of-sale
Supermarket
chain Tesco has announced a move to Microsoft's Windows NT Embedded
4.0 as its common operating platform for point-of-sale terminals.
It already
has systems based on MS-DOS and Windows NT in its business covering
both stores and petrol stations but will now be able to standardise
point-of-sale technologies using a single code base running Windows
NT, Windows NT Embedded 4.0 and Windows 2000.
Tesco considered
a number of operating platforms, including Linux, before deciding
that Microsoft offered the best option in the fast-moving retail
environment. With Windows NT Embedded 4.0 Tesco will develop future
technology using existing tills while leaving room to migrate. The
pilot project is set to be rolled out across 24,000 tills internationally.
The largest food retailer in the United Kingdom, Tesco also has
stores in the Irish Republic, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic,
Slovakia, France, Thailand, South Korea and Taiwan.
