Embedded Systems Show - May 2001
Microsoft's Talisker
comes to town
Microsoft has
been busy in the embedded systems area, and a new version of Windows
CE, currently code-named Talisker, is now in beta testing. Due for
final release in late 2001, the operating system is designed to
handle small footprint, connected mobile devices.
Talisker consolidates
the changes made between CE2 and CE3, with a more realistic licensing
structure and systems integrators having access to the source code
for support and when building CE-based devices. The component-led
approach that produced CE3 is now also being used at the larger
end, and in the wake of Windows XP being released towards the end
of the year it is intended to release an embedded version within
90 days.
A parallel
route to smaller, high-power systems is being offered through the
recently released Server Appliance Kit (SAK), which allows compact
server operating systems to be built containing just the features
they need.
