ABB gets contract for
largest ever control system
Malaysia’s newest
coal-fired power station, at Manjung, 200 kilometres north of Kuala
Lumpur, will be fully controlled by one of ABB’s largest ever control
systems. The station, to be fuelled by mainly sub-bituminous and
other low-sulphur grade coal, is being built in a three-year project
valued at around £640 million. Control of the plant will involve
altogether some 25,000 I/O, plus 24 serial links for soft I/O. The
plant, due to start operation in 2003, is being constructed by a
consortium comprising Alstom Power and local company Peremba Construction.
The ABB automation
system was specified by the end user, already a user of ABB control
systems at many other power stations. It will provide total control
of all areas of the power plant, including the boilers and burners
on the three 700 MW gensets, coal mills, flue gas desulphurisation
and common services, such as feed water pumps. As a potential starting
point for future Asset Optimisation strategies, much of the field
instrumentation for the project will be delivered with HART capability
– ABB’s Contrans-I interface system allowing digital information
to be accessed and utilised for non-control purposes. ABB Automation
has also secured an order for the boiler protection system for the
same project based on the ABB Triguard Triple Modular Redundant
architecture.
