Airport goes for SCADA
solution
An advanced
SCADA system is now being used at the busy Leeds Bradford International
Airport to control runway lighting. Unlike conventional airport
control applications, the SCADA system at Leeds Bradford can be
used as a command and control centre directly on the airport’s control
tower.
The WinCC SCADA
system situated in the control tower is accessed via two identical
SIMATIC HMI operator touch panels. These replace the mimic displays
more usually found in airports. The redundancy is required at this
level of the system in order to ensue at that operation can be maintained
even in the event of a panel failure. The SIMATIC HMI panels are
then linked to a main SIMATIC S7 PLC, known as the ‘A Centre’. This
then provides distributed control of the lighting via substations
located around the airport. Each of the three ‘B centres’ then includes
a further SIMATIC S7 PLC and Step 7 software control. Operators
use a simulation environment for training and familiarisation.
Systems Integrator
ATG installed the system.
